     Peters' Bone Vise

We handle a large number of bone cases in our lab. Our pathologists' assistants spent hours cutting these with our old methods. I  put together a crude version of this vise for use in our lab about 3 years ago.  The vice is a cradle style angle vise made by the Palmgren company.  The vice can be positioned at any angle over a 90 degree range. The jaws were designed after molding a number of femoral head specimens and taking averages of the dimensions and radii. The vice will tightly hold bone specimens when cutting with hand or power saws.

-The vertical position is ideal for sawing downward with a hand or power saw.

-The vise can be fixed at a variety if angles for precisely approaching fine cutting tasks.

-The vise will provide a firm hold on bones of any shape making the task of cutting a great deal easier whether using hand saw or power saw.

-The vise weighs a hefty 25 lbs. and is mounted on a 12" Corian® platform for portability and ease of cleaning. Heavy duty handles are mounted on the platform allowing it to be carried easily to a sink and cleaned.  Low rubber feet offer a solid base. The platform can also be clamped to its work table for further stability.

Jaws are designed with two "V" shaped grooves offering a 4 point hold on a variety of round bones. The  knurled  gripping surface tightly grips the slipperiest of specimens. The jaws measure 4" x 2 1/2" and open 3" wide.

I am proud to say the jaws are machined in New York by the The Dualtron manufacturing company who  precision machine all of our apparatus.

After a search of the tool catalogues I found a saw to team with this vise made  by Bosch called the Finecut Power Handsaw Model 1640VS. It has a very thin blade and is designed to precision cut and flush cut a variety of materials. It is a perfect mate for this vise. You can buy this directly from Bosch or at many hardware store for around  $110. We use the the fine blade. The blade removes easily for cleaning. The saw body can be wiped with a towel and disinfectant.

I find by leaning the butt of the saw on the workbench and slowly levering the saw blade to the bone surface I can precisely approach a new cut even on a hard smooth surface. The last picture shows what you can do with this vise and saw combination.

The vise can be cleaned by rinsing with a spray disinfectant, rinsing with water, thoroughly drying and oiling moving parts.

If you decide to use a power saw of any type remember to use all safety precautions including mask, safety eyewear, and a ventilated hood.

Read all directions and make sure you understand the use of any power tools.
